International Law Competition: RAU team advanced to the semifinal
A team of Law students of the Russian-Armenian University advanced to the semifinals on the basis of International Law Contest "Youth for Peace". The RAU team consisted of Sofia Zakharian (III year,BA), Arthur Ghulyan (III year, BA) and Anna Yahshibekyan (I year, MA).
XI Law Competition "Youth for Peace" was held from 26 to 30 of September at the International University "MITSO" (Minsk). The knowledge of international law competed eight teams of law students from the leading universities of the world: MGIMO (Moscow), BPP University (London), Chinese Institute of Industrial Relations (Beijing), State Institute of International Relations of Moldova (Chisinau), etc.
Law Competition on international humanitarian law gave participants an opportunity to evaluate various aspects of armed conflict from a legal point of view, act as those or other actors (lawyers of the fictional country, representatives of a fictitious country on an improvised meeting of the UN Security Council etc.).
Performances were judged by a competent jury composed of international experts on international law. Among them were Olivier Ribbelink, a senior fellow at the Institute of International and European Law of T. Asser, a member of the Committee of the International Law Association on Space Law (Netherlands); Michael J. Strauss, professor of international relations at the Center for the Study of Diplomacy and Strategy, a lecturer at the University Paris Descartes (France, UK); Lionel Blackman, president of the International Human Rights organization, a visiting fellow at the University of South Bank (UK); Torsten Stein, Professor of International and European Law, Director of the Institute of International and European Studies of the University of Saarland (Germany). Experts also conducted several lectures at the International University "MITSO".
According to organizers, the International Law Competition "Youth for Peace" held as a part of the United Nations Global initiative "Academic Impact". The project brings together higher education institutions to better support the internationally recognized principles of human rights, sustainable development of society and competent conflict resolution.
Note that the main purpose of the International Law Competition "Youth for Peace" is an involvement of young people in political and cultural life of society, including the dissemination of ideas of tolerance and maintain intercultural dialogue. The Competition was organized by the International University "MITSO" and the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus. The Competition is held annually since 2006. Last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has included it in the list of prestigious competitions in the field of international law.
