Student forum on the objectives of sustainable development of the United Nations
On the 21st of October in Russian-Armenian University was held a forum for students in cooperation with the Yerevan office of the United Nations and the organization AIESEC. The forum was dedicated to one of the sustainable development goals of the UN, particularly, "Peace, justice and effective institutions."
"From January 1, 2016 "17 sustainable development goals " highlighted by the United Nations, formally entered into force, - said the head of the UN Mission Public Information Office in Armenia Armine Galajyan, - Forum aims to give young people a deeper understanding of the goals of sustainable development and their effective implementation".
Among the sustainable development goals - the eradication of poverty and hunger, providing quality education, decent work, gender equality, appropriate sanitary conditions, the adoption of measures to combat climate change, conservation of marine ecosystems, and others.
During the forum, students have watched a number of videos of how people around the world with the help of the UN initiative are taking steps aimed at sustainable development of the society. Especially, the topics of education and poverty were pointed out. "In the world there is a problem of access to quality education, related, in particular, to poverty, - said a member of the Eurasia Partnership Foundation and the head of the project Anush Sargsyan. - In addition, there is the problem of training for students with disabilities".
Also, the rights of minorities were discussed during the meeting. Students and experts agreed that minorities have the same rights to education, health, social protection, etc., as well as the rest of the Armenian citizens.
In addition, participants discussed the topic of freedom of speech. "Nothing and no one should interfere with the work of journalists, - assured Anush Sargsyan. - Journalists should not be afraid to be published".
The participants came to the conclusion that without the assistance of the government, public and international organizations country and society cannot develop efficiently.
It should be noted that such forums are held during October in the leading universities of Armenia.
