RAU and UNHCR Reinforce Cooperation

On May 2, Mr. Armen Darbinyan, RAU Rector, and Mr. Christoph Bierwirth, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Russian-Armenian University (RAU).

The MoU aims to promote teaching and research on Public International Law, International Human Rights Law and International Refugee Law and to strengthen the existing cooperation between the parties. The agreement additionally includes organization of joint conferences, seminars, facilitation and support of the Summer School on Public International Law.

Mr. Darbinyan welcomed the guests from the Armenian office of UNHCR and highlighted the importance of joint work and research in International Law and International Refugee Law in Armenia. He said, "Armenia, a country with a small economy, managed to take in more than 20 thousand refugees, give them shelter and a chance to work and make a new start after the events in Syria. I consider it a major achievement and a strong demonstration of Armenia's capability to be in line with the civilized states."

As Mr. Christoph Bierwirth, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), underlined, the signing of the agreement was not the beginning but a continuation and bringing to the next level the already existing cooperation.

He also confided his thoughts about Armenia's inherent understanding towards refugees, "I think there is no country in the world where the institution of asylum, the value of the idea of finding protection elsewhere, when people are victims of prosecution, is so well understood as in Armenia. Your history has taught a very tragic lesson, but it has also taught the experience of the many, including Arabic countries willing to help Armenians who could flee beyond the borders of the Ottoman Empire, and the idea of asylum contributed to the survival of many thousands of Armenians. It is not forgotten, and we have to make the best out of this memory to help those in need of help today".

Over the course of collaboration between Russian-Armenian University (RAU) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia, the organizations conducted joint events, a summer school and trainings for the benefit of Armenian students and young researchers.
