Summer School on International Law Opening

On June 26-July 4, the Summer School on Public International Law (PIL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL) took place at Russian-Armenian University (RAU) as a result of the successful cooperation between RAU, UNHCR Armenia, Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Armenia and “Mission Armenia” charitable non-governmental organization. In 2016, RAU hosted the first Summer School in this format. Based on the successful experience and results of the Summer School - 2016, the organizers confirmed their interest to continue this project in the future.

During his welcoming speech, RAU Vice-Rector for Science Mr. Pargev Avetisyan emphasized the importance of the Summer School in the field of International Law and Human Rights, as well as the topicality of their development.

Among the main goals of the Summer School, the organizers mentioned increasing the level of legal awareness among future lawyers and effectiveness of organizing such events, expanding knowledge and improving the professional skills of the participants.

The interest in the field of International Law is obviously increasing: this year we have received a lot more applications for the Summer School than we did last year. There was significant competition among the candidates, noted Ms. Lilit Yeremyan, Head of RAU Department of International Law and European Law.

Ms. Iren Aloyan, Legal Adviser of the ICRC Delegation in Armenia, in her turn noted the importance of studying Public International Law as a key prerequisite to learning the International Humanitarian Law, as well as preparing specialists in the field.

During the opening ceremony, the Protection Associate at the UNHCR Ms. Naira Marutyan pointed out the necessity of institutional cooperation between state bodies, international organizations and higher educational institutions for assuring human rights protection in general and protection of refugees in particular. We are very happy about the already two-year productive cooperation with RAU, highlighted Ms. N. Marutyan.

This year international experts in the field have been invited to deliver an IHRL course during the Summer School: Legal Adviser for the ICRC Advisory Service on International Humanitarian Law Maria Ximena Londoño, CoE Project Manager Andrey Esin and Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan Natalia Voutova. The lectures on PIL were conducted by Head of RAU Department of International Law and European Law Ms. Lilit Yeremyan, PhD, as well as lecturers of the Department: Ara Khzmakyan, PhD, Levon Gevorgyan, PhD, and Izabella Merabova.

The participants of the Summer School on PIL and IHRL will be given the opportunity to participate on a competitive basis in the summer school on International Humanitarian Law organized by the ICRC Delegation in Armenia in cooperation with the American University in Armenia and the Law School on refugees’ rights to be organized by the UNHCR Armenia in cooperation with the charitable non-governmental organization Mission Armenia and Yerevan State University.

The closing ceremony of the Summer School took place at Russian-Armenian University on July 4. The participants were awarded with Certificates of Completion.
